“This was one of the best author visits we’ve ever had! . . . Students could relate to Misa on a personal level. She did an amazing job of being honest and authentic.” Michele Widdes, Chris Roberts, and Andrea Handelman, ELA and Humanities teachers at Sunset Ridge School, Northfield, IL

Misa Sugiura‘s (she/her) (misasugiura.com) books combine engaging plots and plenty of humor with characters and themes that resonate deeply with kids. Her middle grade fantasy, Momo Arashima Steals the Sword of the Wind, was praised as “a page-turning, emotion packed adventure” (Booklist, starred review); her young adult novels have garnered numerous starred reviews and been placed on “Best of” lists of organizations including Kirkus, the New York Public Library, the Chicago Public Library, and the National Council for the Social Studies. Her debut novel, It’s Not Like It’s a Secret, won the ALA 2018 Asian Pacific American Award for Literature.

A former classroom teacher, Misa loves visiting schools and classrooms; nowhere does she feel more at home than with a group of students. She strives to make her presentations entertaining, relatable, and interactive—but also informative and thought-provoking.

Misa’s ancestors include a poet, a priestess, a samurai, and a stowaway. She was born and raised in Chicagoland and now lives under a giant oak tree in the San Francisco Bay Area with her family and a cat named Mouse.
